Co.Co.Dive Miri – IDC July 2014

It has been 2 years in the making but Co.Co Dive finally became a PADI 5 Star IDC Resort and our first IDC took place on 15 July 2014. My Platinum Course Director and personal friend, Grant Martin, flew over from Vietnam to run the first ever IDC in Sarawak, Borneo.

We had 5 candidates from different corners of the globe; a young English gentleman, David Buggy, a loud and proud Aussie chick, Kiah Greenland, a very typical laid back Italian dude, Adam Licciardello, a hilarious Chinese Malay from Kuala Lumpur, Willie Chew, and our very own local Sarawakian from Marudi, Roy Jok NGau.

What a hectic yet exciting two weeks it was! For me it was great to get back into the swing of assisting & teaching on IDC’s and seeing our first IDC up and running. We decided to go with a full 14 day program to allow time to cover any problems with the theoretical part of the course. Tenby International School allowed us to use their brand new pool for the duration of the course and also the IE. The weather conditions were on our side and the candidates all worked hard revisiting Physics and Physiology plus getting to grips with the new guidelines & standards and procedures of the new revised PADI Open Water Course.

On 29 July the candidates sat the Instructor Exam (IE) and we were joined by 2 other candidates one from Kota Kinabalu Mr Lee & Paul from Sipadan Scuba. The examiner, Mr Marc Van Der Poel, conducted the orientation and laid out the structure for the rest of the day, with exams before lunch, then it was off to the pool. Afterwards it was straight back to the Park City Everly Hotel for Knowledge Development presentations. It was a day of nerves for us instructors, I we were more nervous than the candidates! However, we needn't have worried as everyone passed with flying colours!

The following morning, we were all down the marina for the final hurdle and the Open Water & Rescue presentations. After the briefings set off to the beautiful reef called Eve’s Garden, a short 10 minute ride out. The group were split into two; one doing rescue presentation whilst the other their open water presentations.

All went according to plan and on return debriefs were done on dry land before the final marks were handed out. Certificates were presented back at Co.Co Dive where Mr Johnny Chew, PADI Regional Manager for Asia, was there to congratulate all 7 candidates and partake in the photo opportunities.

Co.Co.Dive, Miri & Sarawak's first ever IDC was a huge success with a 100 percent pass rate, we settle for nothing less! The next IDC will be commencing on 20th of March 2015 with two more planned for July and October 2015. So, come and join us.

I would like to say a big thank you to Grant Martin and Johnny Chew for their help and support in getting us to where we are now.
